At His Feet, Kissing the Walk
And so she kneeled by his feet and wept. Tears fell on his feet like a stream of water washing them clean from the dust. I've heard the song "What can wash away my sins, nothing but the blood of Jesus." And yet in that moment she was first washing his feet in hopes that he would take away the sin in her life, even before he was to go to the cross. It was just a spiritual dialog that God was communicating to represent what was to come. He would wash her sins with his very blood that was flowing through the veins in the feet of the tears she was washing and drying with her hair. Her hair being a representation of her submission to the walk of righteousness.
I'm sure there was gasping, snicking, and chattering of the lips of those that just were in shock that such a woman would do such a thing to the feet of a man. If he only knew what kind of woman she was echoed in that room. Perhaps she could hear the chatting in the background; but to her the greatest concern superseded the purpose that she had come to fulfill in her soul. Her heart ached for righteousness in a place where even the righteous were barely allowed, much less her. But she didn't let those rules nor chatter convince her to stay away from her Lords feet; it's where she ached to be. Forgiveness and grace, her purpose.
Oh how we've missed it as believers when we begin to gather around and just open up the book and read how and what we should become more like this and that, when we need to be like this woman crying, weeping and aching to be close to his feet. Anointing his feet with our tears of repentance and gratitude and drying them with our hair of submission to his walk...
And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment, And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.~Luke 7:37,38
She came as an example to show to them how to enter into his presence by the way of his feet. We've lived so long in the synagogue that we've camped out and pitched a tent by our pews when we should be at his feet anointing them with our tears at the altar. It's at the foot of the cross where we find the feet of Jesus.
And who can change the world and turn it upside down when we've gotten so comfortable at the synagogue like the Pharisee instead of the Disciple; we've not gone to the byways nor the hedges to compel them to come in and have our seats. For we are all learned of the book already; yet we've become complacent and we tier of looking at each others faces. We become bitter and it shows on our face when a sinner comes in uninvited by us. And yet we play along with the role of a false righteousness when in reality we reek of pride and self praise of our own name instead of his. We glory in our own instead of him and who he is.
This woman who came in to meet her Lord was remembered throughout the ages that she was purposed to be at his feet anointing them with her tears and drying them with her hair. She kissed the walk.
As a believer I should be daily at the feet of Jesus anointing, kissing, and drying his feet spiritually speaking to be given grace, forgiveness and acceptance. To be clothed in his righteousness in exchange for my filth of sin. For my righteousness I know is as filthy rags. Lord clothe me!
Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.~Revelation 19:7,8
Perhaps spiritually the church, the bride, prepares herself like this woman did by going to the feet of Jesus; finding her there anointing, kissing his feet with repentance and a desire to be closer to him and his walk. And He in return clothes his bride, the church with his righteousness... May our words and actions be of one aching to be near his feet and seeking to be in his presence rather than making a name of our own; but making his name known to a lost world. And perhaps also, the story of the one who was found at the feet of Jesus was a spiritual example of how we should consider approaching life, at his feet kissing the walk...
