Experience Over Tradition
Growing up my parents taught me about Jesus, but it wasn't until I was almost 30 that I sought him on my own and realized that the bible was true and his presence here on earth, is real. I didn't inherit that tradition I sought it out on my own an learned it; and what my parents taught me was in fact truth. However,I only came to the real truth with the experience in my everyday living. It wasn't enough to hear my parents talk about it, I had to open up that spiritual text book on my own and study it then I practiced it in my everyday life and now I Believe.
Just like driving a car, my parents told me how to drive a stick shift. However, when they got out of the car and told me to start driving it home that was when I had to apply what I heard and read. I now know how to drive a stick shift, not because the tradition of my parents owning one, but because I can really drive one and even in a blizzard and not get stuck.
For me, it's Experience over Tradition and I want to live in developing in my spiritual experience with Jesus rather than an inherited tradition. To know it for myself as to why did I believe and, if I believed with such conviction that no one could convince me otherwise.
The later part of my twenties I bought a small black bible to take to work and read. I was very curious as to why so many people read it and why was it really interesting. So I went to work with a small bible in my pocket and every chance I got I would read it and ponder on it. When I looked out into the world I realized that word was truth and humanity was made out of that spoken word I held in my pocket. And all that was wrong in me, the answers were written in that book. It felt as if someone was talking to me as I read it; as if God spoke it into my soul. In fact, he did and it changed me from that day forth.
I don't know what compelled me to buy the book and read it for myself and look into it as I looked into a mirror and saw all my flaws, wrinkles, and youthfulness all at the same time, only that there was something drawing me to look in the book and that is where I met Him face to face daily. Not by tradition only but by experience, my experience now.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
The same was in the beginning with God.
All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.~John 1:1-7
