His Mercy, His View

O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.
Psalm 136:1

I woke up this morning with the words, "For His mercy endureth forever." So when I went to read my bible today, as I opened it up I just happened to open it up in Psalms 136. The verses end with For His mercy endureth forever.

Ironic...I think not!

So, I'm reminded of the prophet Jonah who went to the city of Ninivah to tell them to repent.

Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me. Jonah 1:2

After Jonah gave them the message from the Lord, Jonah waited for the city to be destroyed and while waiting he got angry because God hadn't destroy it.

God's mercy endureth especially, when there is True Repentance. Although Jonah waited for the wicked to be destroyed in his carnal thinking, in God's eye view of the heart, the Ninivites have truly repented. His mercy endureth forever.

God gave Jonah the message for Ninivah to repent from their wickedness. However, Jonah's focused was set on the last part, "Destroy the city." Jonah's booth perspective from the east side of the city was perhaps a great view to see it destroyed if it were to go up in flames. However, God had a better view of the heart's of all the Ninivites even Jonah's heart. He knew him so well he asked him "Doest thou well to be angry?" because in his heart, Jonah was angry.

Then said the Lord, Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for the which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night: And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?~Jonah 4:10,11

What came free and easy for Jonah which was the gourd, he had a good attitude. But for what God told him to give a message of repentance, Jonah struggled to do it in obedience. Jonah had a bad attitude, he was angry. So much so, he wanted to die after not seeing the city be destroyed.

I wonder if Jonah ever considered remembering that God also had mercy on him after the great fish had spit him out... The great fish could've digested him whole. But in actually, the great fish spit him out and Jonah lived; proving God's Mercy on Jonah even after being a hesitating run away prophet.

So I think of it like this, "Doeth thou well to be angry, because His Mercy Endurth Forever..."

So, If we are to be Christ like and Jesus did what the Father told Him, by example we to must do the same for others, have mercy. For His Mercy Endureth Forever...Something to ponder on.

As long as there is life there is a chance for hope and repentance. Do not let the sun go down on your wrath. His Mercy Endureth Forever, surely mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.~Psalm 23:6

What I understood was this, that although the wicked are bad, when God gives them a word to repent and they do, we shouldn't get angry. We should consider as God had mercy on us and we repented, so does God have mercy on them when they repent. After all, He knows the heart of man...Although Jonah was angry, God's mercy was there for him to.

He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? Micah 6:8
